Wait’s Mill 1865-1957

Waitsburg traces its roots back to 1865, when pioneer Sylvester Wait opened a flour mill on Coppei Creek.

Wait’s Mill also known as the Preston-Shaffer Milling Co. was one of the oldest operating mills west of the Mississippi River at the time of its closure in 1957. Wait’s Mill was in the midst of a restoration project when a fire destroyed the mill on September 5, 2009

A Wait’s Mill Kiosk has been installed at the original location of Wait’s Mill just over the Main Street Bridge at the end of Mill Race Park.

The Waitsburg Historical Society maintains exhibits and resources related to the mill and its history, including a replica of the mill at the Bruce Mansion Museum Complex
